After Lockyer was removed off the stretcher, the club would subsequently disclose that he had experienced a heart attack but was still conscious.
The Premier League match between Luton Town and Bournemouth was suspended after Luton’s captain Tom Lockyer collapsed in the middle of the pitch.
The player went down near the centre circle in the second half, and as the physios raced onto the field to provide the appropriate medical attention, he did not get back up. In order for the medical professionals to continue their work, Luton manager Rob Edwards also hurried onto the pitch and escorted his players out.
The supporters cheered as both teams exited the field, and the player was eventually carried off on a stretcher.
“Our medical staff has verified that the captain of the Hatters experienced a heart arrest while on the pitch, but upon being removed on a stretcher, he regained consciousness. We would like to thank the medical professionals from both sides once more for the additional care he received inside the stadium.Tom was taken to the hospital, and we can tell his followers that he is stable and that his family is by his side as he undergoes additional testing, Luton stated on X.
Lockyer had heart surgery in June to fix the issue after collapsing during Luton’s play-off final victory against Coventry at Wembley earlier this year.
According to the BBC, the 28-year-old suffered from atrial fibrillation, a disorder that causes “an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate.” Lockyer was given the all-clear and went back to Luton for preseason training.
