Premier League: Everton defeats Chelsea 2-0, while Tottenham thrashes Newcastle United 4-1. In a 4-1 thumping of a jaded-looking Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur secured their first Premier League victory since October, and Brazilian striker Richarlison also returned to form with two goals.

The unsavory distinction of being the first Premier League team to lead 1-0 in five straight games without winning any of them in midweek was earned by Ange Postecoglou’s team.

This time, though, they never looked back after Destiny Udogie scored the team’s first goal 26 minutes in off a cutback from captain Son Heung-min.

The brilliant Son also fed Richarlison to make it 2-0 before halftime, and he scored again on the hour as Tottenham started to run wild against a Newcastle team that was possibly preoccupied with their Champions League match against Milan the following week.

After being brought down by goalie Martin Dubravka in the 85th minute, Son completed an incredible display by scoring from the penalty spot.

Newcastle’s Joelinton scored a late consolation goal, but it was insufficient to undo the victory for Tottenham, who now sit in fifth place with 30 points from 16 games—seven points behind leaders Liverpool in what looks to be an exciting title fight.

After Everton’s 3-0 victory this week, Newcastle’s sixth league loss of the year drops Eddie Howe’s team to seventh place with 26 points.

EVERTON GOES ON WINNING

With a late second goal from substitute Lewis Dobbin and a goal from Abdoulaye Doucoure in his 100th Premier League appearance for Everton, the team defeated Chelsea 2-0 on Sunday, handing the mid-table London team its third straight away loss.

On minute 54, Dwight McNeil broke forward with the ball and found Dominic Calvert-Lewin with a pass. Robert Sanchez, the Chelsea goalkeeper, turned away the one-on-one opportunity, but Doucoure fired the rebound into the far corner of the net.

Academy-made item In injury time, Dobbin sealed the three points by smashing home a loose ball from a corner to score his first goal in an Everton shirt.

Everton has 13 points from 16 games, while Chelsea has 19 points from 16 games, dropping them to 12th place in the standings. Everton would have been in 10th place, four points ahead of Chelsea, if not for their 10-point deduction for financial violations, which they have appealed.

The Merseysiders, who have now won three straight Premier League games for the first time since March 2021, had some excellent scrambling defense while the visitors controlled possession and spent a large portion of the game in the Everton half. However, they lacked a clinical touch in the home side’s box.
