Hockey great Major Dhyan Chand was born in Allahabad in 1905 into a Rajput family. Today is his birthday. Dhyan Chand had enlisted in the Army, just like his father did. Dhyan Chand started playing hockey while he was in the Army. As a member of the Indian hockey team that won gold in the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Olympics, the hockey wizard brought numerous honors to the country. During the course of his 22-year career, he scored over 400 goals.
The team defeated Germany 8-1 in the 1936 Berlin Olympic final, with Dhyan Chand scoring three goals to lead the way. The match symbolized the pinnacle of India’s hockey accomplishments under Dhyan Chand’s direction.
He kept contributing to the game even after he retired. In addition to being the chief coach at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala, he taught at a number of coaching camps in Rajasthan.
Importance
Every year on National Sports Day, the president of India bestows honors relating to sports, such as the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Dronacharya Award, and Arjuna Award, to recognize athletes and coaches who have represented their country with distinction in their particular sports.
Among the sporting endeavors the government has started on this day over the years is the Khelo India movement, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi began in 2018.
