On the 4th of August All India Muslim Personal Law Board has released a press note raising concern over the growing number of interfaith marriages, validity of such marriages as per Islam, and negative repercussions on the individual and the society as a whole. The matter assumes greater concern when Muslim women choose to marry out of the religious fold. Board has raised the concern after observing the growing number of Muslim women seeking registration of the marriages with local authorities. The rise in interfaith marriages shouldn’t be seen as just a problem rather it is a manifestation of many underlying problems that should be resolved at the grassroots level with the utmost attention.

In Quran, Allah mentions marriage numerous times which every Muslim believes as a word of Allah SWT revealed to Prophet Mohammad PBUH. Allah mentions in Quran, ‘And it is among His signs that He has created for you wives from among yourselves, so that you may find tranquillity in them, and He has created love and kindness between you. Surely in this, there are signs for a people who reflect (30:21). Quran has stipulated clear guidelines for Muslims on selecting suitable spouses and living a peaceful and happy family life. There is an entire chapter dedicated to this matter with the title ‘The Women’ mentioning the various aspects and marriage, marital conflicts, and its remedial action. Islam has treated women with utmost dignity and justice. Upon reading these aspects of the Quran, many Western Women in Europe, America, and many other parts of the world had accepted Islam.

However, Muslims have not realized the importance of understanding the Quran and their own Deen. The primary focus and energy are always devoted solely to achieving worldly affairs. Excellence in school, college, universities, and other academics pursuits is considered the pinnacle of success. Relentless chase and exhaustive competition in academics, devoid students to focus on other things which include systematic learning and studying of Quran and Deen. As a result, we see that they may achieve excellence or success in academics or competitive examination but their knowledge about Deen is hallow rather many of them adopt a negative perception like others about the Deen consider it a backward and outdated entity. For such persons, there is no difference between Islam and other religions and hence marrying anybody doesn’t make any difference for him or her. They start firmly believing in philosophical connotations like, ‘marrying anybody is okay as long as the person is good, all religions are good and all teach good things, humanity is greater than all religions including Islam’. Since they don’t have any idea of the ruling of the Quran and Sunnah and the ultimate purpose of life has not been clearly explained to them, they fall prey to these catchy lines and deviates from their path. Moreover, they start marching on a path that will certainly land them in trouble after the honeymoon period gets over both in this world and the world hereafter.

Apart from interfaith marriage, many other social evils need to be addressed as well which include the prevalence of live-in relationships, adultery, prostitution, homosexuality in society as a fashion that had been glorified by films and TV serials. Islam strongly denounces all these forms of sexual anarchy which lower the dignity of humans and consider women as an object of pleasure and amusement. Muslim Personal Law Board need to formulate strategies to tackle these issues along with other competent Muslim scholars, Muslim Institutions, Muslim intellectuals, Muslim women activists who have learned Quran and know Islam correctly, Muslim Student bodies and above all Muslim parents whose role is the most important. They need to inculcate the right parenting, set the right goals for their children, giving them a gross understanding of Islam and the Quran. Muslims should always remember one thing that the ultimate objective of their life is to ensure the pleasure of Allah SWT without which nothing is successful and all is useless. As Iqbal has mentioned in Urdu…

meri zindagi ka maqsad tere deen ki sarfarazi
Main isliye Musalman main isliye Namazi’

Besides right parenting, there are many other important preventive actions needed from parents in particular and Muslim society in general.

These include

-prioritizing marriages at the earliest suitable age
-prioritizing marriages of widow, divorcee and orphans
-simplifying the marriage ceremonies
-avoiding excessive spending on marriages
discouraging the expensive celebrations of Birthday
-desisting from showing off of the wealth and affluence
-not adopting different approach and mind set for marriage of sons and daughters
-desist from searching for extraordinary beauty, higher education, affluent family background for finding a match
-desist from expecting generous gifts, money and extraordinary protocols of respects from the bride’s family

These civilized social evils mostly influenced from the prevalent Non-Muslim cultures must be abolished completely. A systematic eradication of these evils and reinforcement of reformist movement will be pivotal for Muslim societies. If Muslim society is successful in offering simple, easy and satiable choices for Muslim women and men, why they will struggle to find solace outside of their religion risking their life, identity, generations and existence?
