Saffron party may push to conduct state assembly polls along with Punjab and Uttar Pradesh next year

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has begun conducting surveys of various constituencies which has led to speculations about the ruling party preparing for early elections.

The Gujarat state legislative assembly elections are slated for December 2022, but, according to the rumour mill, BJP may push to conduct polls along with Punjab and Uttar Pradesh early next year.

As per party sources, after the culmination of the local civic body elections, the party has initiated an internal survey that had been put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic second wave.

This gave fuel to the rumour that the ruling party may be preparing for early polls.

Based on the last Gujarat assembly, Lok Sabha, and local civic body polls, there are constituencies divided into categories based on the number of votes in favour of and against party candidates. While there are huge margins in the A grade seats, it gradually dwindles with the next categories of B, C and D.

Taking into consideration caste domination, the party is also conducting a survey of constituencies where a particular community (Read Muslim Voters) has the most votes.

As the BJP is in its element in urban as well as in Patidar-dominated seats, now the party wants to focus on Other Backward Class (OBC) seats.

Thus, conducting surveys will help the party focus and deploy a team for better results, stated sources.

Ruling out the possibility of early elections, Yamal Vyas, chief spokesperson of the BJP said, “Such exercises (surveys) are very routine for the BJP and its workers.

They are conducted regularly after every election. There is no reason for the ruling party to push for early polls as it enjoys full confidence and trust of the people.”

He added, “As such, BJP workers and party leaders are always in election mode, so holding polls early or as scheduled, the party is always prepared for elections.”

Meanwhile, Jayrajsinh Parmar, spokesperson of Congress party said, “It is not the right time for the ruling party to go for early elections.

If it had the confidence to pull through, the BJP would have requested the state election commission (SEC) to declare elections for Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC), which were postponed after filing of nominations.”

Reiterating his confidence in Congress’ preparedness to contest polls, Parmar said, “The party cadre is ready for elections whenever they are held. Our leaders are constantly taking up issues being encountered by the people.”

Meanwhile,All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) will jump into the fray in the 2022 Gujarat assembly election. Apart from new entrants Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), now Mamata Banerjee’s party is also looking for a share of the spoils in the coming assembly election. A state body has been formed and a convener has been named for the party’s Gujarat unit. The party has decided to contest alone in the next assembly election. AITC Gujarat convener Jitendra Khadayta said the state body will soon be formed.

“Trinamool Congress will contest the 2021 election with full force. It has been decided by the party high command that Trinamool Congress will contest as many seats as possible in the 2022 Gujarat assembly election. Our party will not have a tie-up with any other party,” newly appointed state AITC convener Jitendra Khadayta said.

Other parties like AAP and AIMIM, who have tasted success in the recent civic body elections in Gujarat, are also making concerted efforts to strengthen their supporter base ahead of next year’s assembly election.
