Islam is one the most modern and dynamic religions enjoining scientific temperament to its believer. The teaching and conduct of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) must be adopted as guiding principles by all to remain safe during the time of pandemic of COVID-19. Prophetic teachings like covering the face while sneezing, washing the hands frequently, performing ablution, maintaining hygiene, cleaning, and sanitation of surrounding are important for current times.

Besides this, Prophet (PBUH) has demonstrated us to follow the social distancing strongly. Once, a person with leprosy wanted to offer his allegiance to Prophet (PBUH) by doing a hand-shake. Prophet maintained a distance from him and told him that his pledge has already been accepted (Sahih Muslim: Book 39, Hadith No 174).

Furthermore, Prophet (PBUH) has also strongly told us those with a contagious and infectious disease should not be kept with those who are healthy. He ordered to escape a transmissible disease the way a person flees from a lion (Sahih Bukhari 5707). Furthermore, Prophet (PBUH) has told that if you hear of plague in a land, do not enter it and when it has broken out in your land, do not leave it attempting to run away from it (Muslim, 2218).

The current pandemic of COVID-19 has shown extraordinary aggravation in India in recent weeks. This has happened primarily because of not following the prescribed protocols of Social Distancing. The violation of social distancing rule is against the Prophetic Advice and the spirit of Islam. The gathering of people in the markets for shopping, as usual, is posing a threat to the lives of many. Islam doesn’t prompt this kind of casual and ignorant approach. Its the duty of the community leaders and elders to strongly restrict such gatherings and prevent the loss the precious human lives.

As mentioned in Quran, ‘That is why We ordained for the Children of Israel that whoever takes a life—unless as a punishment for murder or mischief in the land—it will be as if they killed all of humanity; and whoever saves a life, it will be as if they saved all of humanity. ˹Although˺ Our messengers already came to them with clear proofs, many of them still transgressed afterward through the land (5: 32).

The priority in such a turbulent time is to protect self and others from this deadly disease. It’s just a matter of time, one has to struggle and strive to remain safe and survive. Knowing risking the life of self is like a suicidal act which has been strongly prohibited in Islam. May Allah protect all humans from this Pandemic.
