Safety Issues with Balcony C Stand

As anticipation builds for the second Test match between India and Bangladesh, significant safety concerns have emerged at Kanpur’s historic Green Park Stadium. The Uttar Pradesh Public Works Department (PWD) has declared a portion of the stadium, specifically Balcony C, as “dangerous.” Consequently, only 1,700 of the 4,800 seats will be available for spectators, raising alarms among officials and fans alike.

 Government Warnings and Structural Integrity

Three days before the match, engineers spent approximately six hours inspecting the Balcony C stand, concluding that its structural integrity was compromised. Government representatives expressed fears that the stand might collapse under the weight of spectators during the game. PWD officials highlighted the risks of gathering large crowds in that area, leading to the decision to close the stand for safety reasons. A PWD engineer cautioned that even a few enthusiastic spectators jumping in celebration could exceed the stand’s weight capacity.

 Floodlight Failures and Visibility Challenges

In addition to seating issues, the stadium’s floodlights are under scrutiny. Poor visibility has been a recurring problem at Green Park, notably during a recent Test match against New Zealand, where inadequate lighting contributed to a dramatic draw. Currently, eight floodlight bulbs near the VIP pavilion are reportedly malfunctioning. Officials worry that if the lighting does not improve, it could significantly impact gameplay, leading to another frustrating scenario for players and fans alike.

Historical Context and Future Implications

Green Park Stadium, owned by the Uttar Pradesh sports department, has not garnered much attention in recent years, especially with the emergence of the newly constructed Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, which boasts superior facilities. The Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) operates from this newer venue, further emphasizing the need for upgrades at Green Park. With the World Test Championship (WTC) match approaching, preparations are critical. UPCA officials acknowledged the urgency, noting, “We have a full 40 days to prepare before a game,” stressing their commitment to making the necessary improvements.

In summary, as India gears up to face Bangladesh, the issues at Green Park Stadium highlight the urgent need for maintenance and upgrades to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
