Goons masquerading as protectors of Hindutva are back to their evil ways. Instead of Muslims, this time they chose new targets—two nuns from Kerala who were accompanied by two novices (prospective members of the religious order) in their novitiate. Claiming to be members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the goons accused the four women of resorting to conversion and began heckling them on the Haridwar-Puri Utkal Express and eventually forced them to de-board at Jhansi where they detained by the railway police for interrogation.
They could move on their onward journey to Odisha only after convincing police that they were not into proselytization. Luckily, the two novices were carrying their baptism certificates with them. This behaviour of the ABVP men had immediate political fallout as Kerala is one of the five states going to polls next month and the Bharatiya Janata Party is trying to gain a strong foothold in the southern State.
So far the BJP has restricted its campaign against conversion in Kerala to love jihad. This incident could hurt BJP’s chances in Kerala as it shows the party as intolerant. In a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan demanded strict action against the offenders. The incident “tarnishes the image of the nation and its ancient tradition of religious tolerance”. Shah has assured the Kerala CM that harassers will be brought to book but BJP governments in the States will have to rein in forces that keep raising their heads to disturb peace and harmony, especially when elections are around.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala have strongly condemned the attack on two nuns and two postulants when they were travelling from New Delhi to Rourkela in Odisha on March 19. The nuns and postulants belong to the Sacred Heart convent under the Kerala-based Syro-Malabar Church. According to the church and videos that have surfaced online, a few members of the Bajrang Dal created a ruckus in the train as it reached Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh, claiming that the nuns were forcefully converting the postulants into Christianity
