Gautam Gambhir on leading the Indian team: As rumors about who will lead Team India intensify, former batter Gautam Gambhir announced on Sunday that he would be interested in succeeding Rahul Dravid as captain of the team.
Gambhir is considered as one among the front-runners for the position when Dravid steps down at the conclusion of the T20 World Cup. Gambhir most recently guided Kolkata Knight Riders to their first Indian Premier League championship in ten years.
It is unclear if Gambhir has filed an application for the head coach position, which had a May 27 deadline.
“I would like being the Indian team’s coach. Being a national team coach is the greatest honor there is. During an Abu Dhabi event, Gambhir stated, “You are representing 140 crore Indians and those across the globe as well.”
In response to a query from a student regarding his coaching experience and potential role in helping the Indian cricket team win the World Cup, Gambhir said, “I have not answered this question, although many people have asked me.” But now I have to respond to you.
“140 crore Indians will contribute to India’s World Cup victory. India will win the World Cup if everyone starts praying for us and we begin to play and represent them. Being courageous is the most crucial thing, according to Gambhir.
Sourav Ganguly, a former captain of India, supported Gambhir earlier this week, calling him “a good candidate” for the position of head coach.
Gambhir was a key member of the Indian squad that won the 2011 ODI World Cup and the first-ever T20 World Cup in 2007. Gambhir announced his retirement from international cricket in 2008.
“Happy dressing rooms lead to winning dressing rooms, and safe dressing rooms are happy dressing rooms. I just kept this mantra in mind when I was in the KKR. By God’s favor, it truly succeeded,” Gambhir continued.
