A few members, notably P Chidambaram, the former Union Home Minister, asked for an extension on the deadline for turning in dissent notes. They have until Wednesday to do their task.
According to opposition sources, Derek O’ Brien and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, members of the TMC, together with Chidambaram, would provide thorough dissent notes.
Several members have already filed dissent notes, including Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury of the Congress, Digvijaya Singh, and N R Elango of the DMK. All ten of the panel’s opposition members, according to sources, would submit individual dissent notes.
Chidambaram reportedly spoke for a long time during the meeting on Monday and made a number of recommendations.
Some members of the Opposition feel that the Bills’ use of Hindi violates the spirit of the Constitution. Nonetheless, the committee has continued to refer to the bills by their Hindi names.
Some members felt the committee should define community service and what it entails because the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which aims to replace the Indian Penal Code, has designated community service.
As an alternative form of punishment for some offenses like small theft, defamation, and an attempt on the life of a public official with the intent to prevent her from carrying out her duties.
Furthermore, some members opposed the introduction of organized crime, corruption, and terror under the new penal code.
