He stated that by 2025, Western Sydney University (WSU) hopes to open an independent campus in Bengaluru.

“Western Sydney University is eager to submit an application when the Indian government completes the rules defining the universities’ ability to function outside of the GIFT City Special Economic Zones. They would like to establish themselves in Bengaluru,” he remarked.

The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) received applications from Deakin University and the University of Wollongong seeking permission to open an international branch campus in GIFT City, Gujarat.

This information was first reported by The Indian Express. The “Setting up and Operation of International Branch Campus and Offshore Education Centers Regulations, 2022,” which were approved by IFSCA—GIFT City’s regulatory body—will apply to their campuses. The campuses of Deakin and Wollongong ought to be open by June 2024.

The rules issued by the University Grants Commission last month will apply to any international universities planning to establish campuses outside of GIFT City.

Sources claim that because the UGC is setting up an online application platform for international universities interested in coming to India, it has not yet made its regulations public. The UGC plans to release its regulations and activate this portal at the same time.

Clare answered, “Not in GIFT City,” in response to a question about whether WSU would be interested in opening a campus there. Their aspirations may include opening a campus in a different region of the nation by 2025.

Clare stated that further partnerships with Indian universities are anticipated in the future when speaking about the potential for more Australian institutions to open campuses in India in order to access the education market.

Six memorandums of understanding were inked on Monday between Flinders University, Griffith University, James Cook University, La Trobe University, University of Canberra, and Western Sydney University and Indian universities.

The purpose of the agreements is to collaborate in exploring the possibility of a consortium approach for degree delivery in India and to increase Indian students’ access to Australian higher education.

While Deakin University will be providing two postgraduate courses, Masters in Business Analytics and Masters in Cybersecurity (professional), to students at the GIFT City campus, with a 60-student maximum for each subject starting in the June 2024 academic year.
