In the second Test match between India and Australia in Delhi, Australian player Peter Handscomb said his catch of Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer at short leg was a “total fluke.”

According to Handscomb, “It hit me in the perfect location to just roll up to my right and I was fortunate enough to sense (the ball) moving right,” he stated on the Unplayable Podcast. “I threw a few hands out and narrowly avoided being hit by it. In catches like that, a lot of luck is involved.

One of Australia’s top bat pad fielders is known as Handscomb. When the Border Gavaskar Trophy began, Handscomb travelled to India and bought a complete set of protective gear intended for baseball catchers.

According to the 31-year-old, “I got myself the vest to protect my chest and then the leg guards, which protect the top of your foot, your shins, and then also above your knee.” Handscomb put his protective gear to good use during Australia’s training camp at Alur near Bangalore prior to the series.

Handscomb stated, “I chose the youth size so that I could still move around and it wasn’t too big.But more than anything, I need someone to give me the courage to stay in front of them when they sweep, to give me the courage to keep focusing on the ball because I’ll know it won’t hurt as much.

“I’ve been considering it for a bat-pad for a long time” (fielding). I asked, “Why don’t we wear more protective (gear)? People put keeping pads underneath their jeans and something like that,” the speaker continued.

During the second innings, Alex Carey successfully caught KL Rahul after the ball rebounded off wicketkeeper Handscomb’s leg. Handscomb added, “It would have just hit my thigh ordinarily since that hit the upper leg guard, which wouldn’t be on a keepers’ pad. In agony, I would have crashed to the deck, and the catch would have been lost. That’s fortunate, he remarked.
