Helping Hands Foundation set up an Operation theatre in Mosque to cater to the poor in Masjid Omer-al-Shifa in Shaheen nagar

Helping Hands Foundation that has been already running a clinic in 3 masjids i.e., Masjide Mustafa, Masjide Mohammadia and Masjid e Omer located in the suburbs of Hyderabad where the residents are the poorest of poor. These clinics set up during the period of lockdown when people were out of work and could hardly afford any medical treatment. These clinics which provided free medical aid proved to be of invaluable help the people living in Wadi e Mustafa and Shaheen nagar.

And now again Helping Hands Foundation (HHF) has come up with another innovative strategy to be of help to the vulnerable. They have set up an operation theatre for minor surgeries in Masjid Omer-al-Shifa in Shaheen nagar.

These clinics render primary health care in addition to catering to dental problems and ophthalmology being equipped with a dental chair and other medical equipments to treat non communicable diseases, eye check-ups. All services are free of cost.

Masjid Mustafa even has a fitness centre exclusively for women where they are advised regarding their diet, physical activity like brisk walking, some cardio warm-ups, stretches etc.

And now by setting up an operation theatre (OT) that is fully equipped for minor surgeries, the NGO has solved major health problems of the community.

“Several expensive surgical procedures like lipoma excision, burn wounds dressing, Corns, Benign Cysts, diabetic foot will be treated by a General Surgeon and a team of trained nurses. The OT has all modern equipment and is being maintained in highly hygienic environment with all aspectic protocols in place,” explained Mujtaba Aksari, the CEO of HHF.

He shared that the OT has equipments like surgery table, OT lights, advanced instrumentation, bio-waste disposal process for keeping good hygiene and sanitation for patient safety.

The minor surgeries are performed free of cost thus saving the poor patient around Rs. 20000 to Rs.25000 per head. There are 2 surgeons, one is a senior general surgeon on call while the other surgeon is always there. There are 2 fully trained qualified nurses, 10 counsellors and 5 helpers in the clinic and the OT.

“The patients are given treatment here irrespective of their caste or religion”, says Mujtaba.

HHF works in collaboration with AMPI (American Muslim physicians of Indian origin), USAto run their clinics in the 3 masjids. People from more than 20 slums access these clinics.

Most of the cases that have come up for minor operation here are of people ailing from diabetic foot, Corns, Lipomas, Keloids, in growing nails, benign fibro adenomas, burn wounds, sebaceous cysts and non-healing ulcers.

Till date, in a span of 20 days, about 30 minor operations have been performed in this OT.
