Shankersinh Vaghela has been lobbying for comeback in party

It looks that Gujarat’s Congress leader, AICC spokesperson and RS MP Shaktisinh Gohil is almost all set to be President of Gujarat Congress.
After months of speculation over the appointment of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president post the resignation of Amit Chavda, the party high command seems to have settled on Shaktisinh Gohil as his successor, said sources on Sunday. An official announcement will be soon made about the new appointment by party leaders.
Meanwhile, former Union minister Bharatsinh Solanki, who had been camping in Delhi hoping to meet with senior leaders of the Indian National Congress (INC), has returned to the state after failing to secure a meeting.
According to sources, he tried to get an appointment with national leader Rahul Gandhi and party president Sonia Gandhi but could not secure one. Solanki had travelled to Delhi hoping to discuss changes in the Gujarat organization and pitch himself as a potential candidate for state party president or some other OBC leader.
Sources also confirmed that veteran leader Shankersinh Vaghela has been lobbying for a homecoming to the Congress party. His ‘lobbyists’ have indicated to the high command that he is open to rejoining the party as the GPCC president.
The new leader will need to supervise the state organisation, prepare elections strategy, while working on the ground with the cadres.
Not only this, Rahul Gandhi will be focusing on the Gujarat elections like he did in 2017. Sources said he would spend quality time campaigning in the State. And he would prefer a leader who gives him the right feedback from ground zero.
Politics in the Gujarat state has revolved around casteism for a long time, with even the so-called secular Congress party’s leaders not immune to it.
A leader under the condition of anonymity for fear of career blowback questioned the motivation of current Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Amit Chavda and Bharat Solanki on not promoting other caste leaders.
“A change will only be possible if the party comes to power, but top leaders do not want to be in power it seems,” said a senior Congress leader.
The party is revolving around vote bank politics,” said another senior Congress leader. For the same reason, even women cell leaders do not have sufficient supporters.
The losses accumulated by the party have been due to Thakorvad, Patidarvad and Muslims – which now have another option in the form of other parties.
