When an infectious disease crosses the boundary of a country it is referred as pandemic. The humanity has witnessed numerous pandemic since the time of its existence. Moreover, many communicable diseases had haunted humanity for centuries; Malaria, Leprosy, Tuberculosis, Influenza and Small Pox are few prominent ones. The advancement in scientific research and innovations over the years paved the way for an effective treatment option for these diseases.
In the beginning most of the diseases were considered as punishment from the God for teaching a lesson for the sinners. However, with passage of time people get acquainted with the cure and proper treatment options. Some of the diseases have been totally eradicated from the face of earth by effective vaccination; small pox is the one of the best example of this.
When COVID-19 started a vast majority of people were considering it as a hoax or fake propaganda and ploy of big pharmaceuticals giants to mint money. Social media has reinforced the false beliefs of masses resulting in compromise of the preventive measures on vast scale. Since humanity has not witnessed a pandemic of this magnitude in last 100 years, many failed to understand its existence.
In the past the Bubonic Plague has caused 12 Million deaths in India compared to 3 Million all over the world. For COVID-19 spread the major contributing factors were compromise of the guidelines, not maintaining the social distancing, poor hygiene, not following of protocols like frequent washing and sanitizing of hands, wearing mask in public places and effective enforcement of the rules and regulations.
Still it is not too late, the general public need to adopt a scientific temperament, follow the guidelines strictly without the any compromise and above all embrace the vaccination program on priority basis. India has the largest production capacity of the vaccines which need to be deployed effectively to eradicate the disease completely.
The challenge of mutation of virus will always there and hence the vaccination will be comprising of multiple doses spread over a period of time. Vaccination has got the potential to liberate humanity from the COVID-19 within few years as it happened with the small pox. Those who are forty years and above can still find a big round patch on their elbow as a mark of the vaccination for small pox; however, the later generations are not aware of it. Kindly don’t fall prey to propaganda, be scientific in orientation support the vaccination drive to eradicate the pandemic.
