Wait for last rites at the city crematoriums have become longer in Surat

By our correspondent Surat

In yet another case of negligence, staffers at the New Civil Hospital (NCH) in the city switched the dead bodies of two women belonging to different religions on Sunday. The situation got tense when family members of one of the deceased Shabana Salim, realized that her body had been cremated with Hindu rituals as report just poured in.

A crowd gathered outside the hospital premises and stones were pelted into the COVID-19 ward.

Narrating the family’s ordeal, Asif, Shabana’s brother said, “My sister had not been keeping well, so we took her to a private hospital, where she tested positive for COVID-19. Then, we took her to the COVID-19 centre at NCH and she was administered treatment for the virus for eight days.

All of us spoke to her on the ninth day and she pleaded with us to collect her from the hospital.” He added, “We spoke with Dr Agarwal, who was incharge of the ward, about her health. He advised us to let her stay put and continue treatment for a few more days. We agreed and then received a call from the hospital a couple of hours later informing us that Shabana was dead.

Shocked, we were unable to come to terms with it.” The family alleged that they made several attempts to demand Shabana’s body but the hospital management refused to release it to them.

According to them, the body that was supposed to be cremated was of a woman named Sushila. Enraged by the error made by the hospital, relatives pelted stones at the COVID-19 ward. They were dispersed by police officials who reached the spot.

As report from TOI, Wait for last rites at the city crematoriums have become longer with authorities imposing Covid-19 protocol on priority for suspected bodies. While bodies continue to reach the three main crematoriums covered in PPE kit, cremation of other general bodies gets delayed with family members having to wait for hours for their turn.

At Ramnath Ghela Crematorium (RGC) in Umra, cremations have been rising consistently for the past one week. Of an average 31 bodies, nearly six are performed under Covid-19 protocols. At Kurukshetra Crematorium in Jahangirpura, eight of an average 23 bodies are being cremated under protocols for the past one week.
