Virat Kohli’s weakness: During the first Test match against Bangladesh, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli were unable to leave their imprint under challenging conditions.

On the first day of the first Test match against Bangladesh in Chennai, Team India suffered a top-order collapse, which marked the beginning of a difficult journey back to Test cricket. At the MA Chidambaram Stadium, where the pitch was extremely fast, India was assigned to bat first and found it difficult to counter the experienced bowling of 24-year-old Hasan Mahmud.

Playing in just his fourth Test match, the youthful Bangladeshi bowler destroyed India’s renowned top-order, taking away skipper Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli in the opening session.

Mahmud took use of the movement available to make life difficult for the Indian batsmen under cloudy conditions. While Bangladesh’s top bowler Taskin Ahmed gave Rohit Sharma plenty of space outside the off-stump, Mahmud maintained a methodical approach, regularly aiming for the off-stump line and causing mistakes in the Indian captain.

In the sixth over, Mahmud’s perseverance paid off as he forced Rohit to attempt a tentative poke, catching the outside edge and setting Najmul Hossain Shanto up for a fine catch at slip. The first setback for India came with Rohit’s dismissal for six.

India’s troubles got worse when Shubman Gill left the game without adding a point. The youthful batsman, who had just entered the Test team after captaining India A in the Duleep Trophy, was caught off guard by a leg-side ball from Mahmud.

But Kohli’s well-known difficulties with deliveries outside of off-stump eventually caught up with him. India found themselves in more difficulties when Mahmud, maintaining his discipline with his line, lured Kohli into a cover drive. The Indian great then edged the ball to Litton Das.

Before lunch, three of India’s most important batsmen returned to the pavilion, leaving them in trouble. Bangladesh, on the other hand, have carried on from their historic Test series victory against the hosts in Pakistan, when they swept them 2-0.
