When Harry Kane scored four goals against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday, he eclipsed Wayne Rooney’s record for the most goals scored by an English player in the Champions League. Kane plays forward for Bayern Munich.
In one of the most scoring games in Champions League history, Bayern destroyed Dinamo Zagreb 9-2, shattering multiple records along the way. It was also an emphatic start for new coach Vincent Kompany in European play.
“It’s a great game, a little crazy, for sure,” Kane said to broadcaster DAZN. “It was an amazing night to score all those goals in the end.”
After surpassing Rooney’s record of 30 goals in the competition, Kane scored in the 19th, 53rd, 73rd, and 78th minutes, for a total of 33 goals. Three of those goals were penalties.
After the second penalty, Kane admitted, “I honestly didn’t know what to do with the third one, but thankfully I was able to put it away.”
After Ronaël Pierre-Gabriel fouled teammate Aleksandar Pavlovic, Kane scored the first goal from the penalty spot to give Bayern the advantage over the Croatian team.
That tied Rooney’s record at thirty, and in the 57th, after goalie Ivan Nevistic parried Joshua Kimmich’s attempt, Kane scored his 31st goal off a rebound.
Kane increased his record by scoring two more goals from the penalty spot.
In the convincing victory, four more Bayern players scored, including two goals from recently acquired Michael Olise, who had previously signed with Crystal Palace for the Champions League.
Bayern became the first side to score nine goals in the history of the Champions League with a header from Leon Goretzka in stoppage time. In the previous European Cup, a few teams—including Bayern—achieved such accomplishment. According to UEFA, it was the competition’s highest-scoring match in terms of total goals since Borussia Dortmund defeated Legia Warsaw 8-4 in 2016.
The 31-year-old Kane scored 21 goals for Tottenham before joining Bayern Munich a year ago, and he has scored 12 goals in the Champions League since then.
Since joining Bayern, Kane has scored 53 goals in 50 games in all competitions.
In his previous three games for club and country, Kane has scored nine goals. On Saturday, he scored a hat trick for Bayern against Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga and two goals for England against Finland in his 100th international match.
With eight goals apiece, Kane and Kylian Mbappé shared the top spot in the Champions League the previous season.
When Thomas Müller entered the game for Bayern for the 152nd time as a substitute, yet another record was shattered. That breaks a tie with former Barcelona star Xavi Hernandez as the most for a player for a single club. Of all the players in the tournament, Müller has made the fourth-most appearances combined.
