Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad hit half-centuries to lead India to a five-wicket victory against Australia in the opening ODI of the three-match series on Friday.

Chasing a goal of 277, Gill smashed 74 off 63 balls, while Gaikwad hit 71 off 77 as India reached 281 for five with eight balls to spare.

KL Rahul, the captain, made 58 runs without being bowled, and Suryakumar Yadav made 50 runs. Earlier, Australia was bowled out for 276 in 50 overs.

Down the batting order, wicketkeeper Josh Inglis chipped in with 45 along with David Warner’s 52, Steve Smith’s 41, and Josh’s contributions.

Mohammed Shami, a pacer, was the standout Indian bowler, returning with 5/51 while dismissing Mitchell Marsh, Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Short, and Sean Abbott.
