Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati has inked four Memorandums of Understanding    (MoUs) with foreign academic institutions, solidifying its international collaborations. Through these collaborations, the institute hopes to improve academic collaboration and knowledge exchange.

First MoU is with Canada’s Dalhousie University. Through the establishment of a Joint Doctoral Programme, academics and students from the two institutions will be able to work together on dynamic research projects. This collaboration seeks to foster an environment that is supportive of ground-breaking discoveries and academic excellence through student and faculty exchange programmes, collaborative research projects, and the sharing of research materials. Diverse viewpoints and areas of expertise will be brought to the joint supervision of PhD candidates, enhancing the educational experience and raising the calibre of research outputs.

Also, IIT Guwahati and Gifu University in Japan have inked three memorandums of understanding. These partnerships centre on the International Joint PhD Programme, which has a three-year typical duration. The programme offers students a comprehensive educational experience through a collaborative course design effort between the two universities. Faculty from both schools will advise and mentor scholars, guaranteeing high academic standards and encouraging creative research products.

The International Master’s Joint Degree Programme in Food Science and Technology is another initiative in partnership with Gifu University. This programme emphasises data sharing and aims to develop highly skilled professionals in the field of food science. It is overseen by collaborative management between the two institutes. This initiative helps to create a sustainable society by optimising the use of resources.

Furthermore, as part of the Inter-University Exchange Project, Gifu University and IIT Guwahati launched the Glocal Expert Programme, an international joint-certificate initiative. Through this programme, students can become certified by both universities, which improves their global competencies and cross-cultural learning.

The collaborations were strengthened at the IIT Guwahati-hosted Japan-NER Bioeconomic Technology Cooperation Symposium 2024 (JNBTCS-2024). The North-Eastern Region (NER) of India and Japan’s bio-economic development are the main topics of discussion during this three-day conference. Academic sessions, poster presentations, and invited talks on state-of-the-art research in food supply chains, sustainable technology, disaster management, and biomass utilization—specifically in the NER’s bamboo resources—will be featured at the symposium.

The Agreement on the Glocal Expert Programme and the Memorandums of Understanding for the Joint Ph.D. and Joint M.Tech programmes were approved by Prof. Kazuhiro Yoshida, President of Gifu University. Prof. Yoshida received an appointment as an Honorary Professor at IIT Guwahati in appreciation of his contributions.

The goal of the partnerships with Gifu University and Dalhousie University is to offer students a range of learning opportunities and experiences, promoting a holistic learning environment at IIT Guwahati. The institute’s dedication to fostering the intellectual and personal development of its students is strengthened by these international collaborations.

IIT Guwahati is consolidating its standing as a preeminent academic institution by promoting academic excellence and innovation through global collaborations and knowledge exchange.
