The BCCI is now considering raising the match fees for Tests, placing a premium on the long-form game, in light of the recent trend of players choosing to save themselves for the Indian Premier League (IPL) while ignoring red-ball cricket.

It has been gathered that the board chose to rewrite the pay scale in response to wicket-keeper batsman Ishan Kishan turning down invitations from the team management to play domestic cricket in favour of getting ready for the Indian Premier League, which kicks off next month.

“For example, if someone plays all Test series in a calendar year, he should be rewarded additionally, apart from the annual retainer contract,” a source in the Board explained in reference to the new compensation model. This is to guarantee that more players show up for red-ball cricket. This would be an extra benefit of participating in Test cricket.

After this IPL season, if the new compensation model is approved, it will be put into effect. The extra incentive that a player will get for participating in every Test series during a season is being worked out by the BCCI. As of right now, the BCCI pays match fees of Rs 15 lakh for each Test, Rs 6 lakh for each ODI, and Rs 3 lakh for T20 internationals.
