Islam has always promoted the simplicity of marriages and wedding ceremonies. However, many Muslims couldn’t escape the temptation of overspending and lavish wedding ceremonies suitable to their own perceived standard. This practice put a high benchmark in the society, making marriages highly unaffordable for all especially for the economically weaker section of the society. As a result, many individuals fail to get married at a suitable age. Lavish marriages have become a menace in big cities like Hyderabad, Lucknow, and Mumbai. Furthermore, small towns are not behind in copying this evil practice.

In recent times, many families were not able to hold marriage ceremonies due to the COVID travel restriction and ban on large social gatherings. The practice of online solemnization of marriages has attracted a lot of attention and acclaim. Online marriages took place within the house through online platforms like Zoom, Teams, GoToMeeting, etc. The requisite formalities of a Muslim wedding can take place online, eventually followed by the registration process which can be accomplished same time. As without registration, the process of solemnization will not be considered legitimate.

The online formalities involve mutual acceptance of bride and groom in presence of the witness, Khutbah Nikah, and celebration within the house. At a subsequent step, a send-off ceremony could be held with close relatives followed by the Valimah as prescribed by Prophet PBUH. Such marriages can take place from a distance hence doesn’t involve traveling and social gathering. There are many instances where families celebrating weddings with gatherings suffered COVID-related tragedies in their houses immediately after the functions. However, in online mode, these kinds of untoward incidences can be avoided.

The other obvious advantages of such marriages include low cost, wide participation, adherence to social distancing norms, no need to travel on an immediate basis, and ease and simplicity of the process. Moreover, this practice has got the approval of Muslim Scholars on basis that one of the Nikah of Prophet PBUH with Umm Habiba daughter of Abu Sufyan RA has taken place in Abyssinia in absence of Prophet PBUH. This means such marriages are correct and should be followed in present-day scenarios.

Many Western, Eastern and cultures have lost the importance of marriages in their society even Indian society has been seriously gripping under the culture of live-in relationships. Muslim intellectuals, scholars, parents, and individuals should contemplate various options of making marriage simple, affordable, and easy. As Prophet PBUH has promoted simple and easy marriage so that people couldn’t fall prey to fornication. Muslim societies need to open their mind and act fast before it’s too late.
