Controlling what someone can eat or can’t eat is a violation of personal rights and is a form of discrimination

By Bindu Tg  Banglore

Beef has been a staple diet of North-east and has cultural significance. Beef – the eating of it, the cooking of it, the killing of cows to cook and eat it – was not a bone of contention when BJP was rallying around during elections in NE. BJP leaders from Meghalaya, Nagaland and Mizoram have said that UP-style beef politics would not come to the North East. Local BJP leaders have also admitted to having beef, though I don’t understand why is it such a big deal!

So clearly, ideology is all a bumkum, it’s always been a matter of convenience. If banning beef can fetch them votes, so be it. But if its going to cost them votes, then they won’t bat an eyelid to swim in chunks of beef in a peppery gravy ladled out from steamy cauldrons.

The government sees no issue in exporting beef and beef products, as well. India is one among the top beef exporters in the world only behind Brazil, Australia and US with more than 1 million metric tonnes of export in 2020, worth about $3 billion. Until 2015-16, India was the second largest exporter of beef only behind Brazil with livestock sector contributing to about 4.5% of the country’s total GDP.

Cow slaughter is not banned in Tripura where the lynching incidents have occured. Food habits are governed by social, economic, cultural and environmental conditions of a region. Controlling what someone can eat or can’t eat is a violation of personal rights and is a form of discrimination. It also provides livelihood to many, not to forget the increase of instances in cows being abandoned.

It’s high time these self-styled cow protectors are branded terrorists, for they continue to use unlawful violence and intimidation against civilians in the pursuit of senseless political aims. (Views are personal)
