Opinion: India now is a land of cow urine drinking messianic cult led by an illiterate clown

Two decades ago, the world touted India to be the next superpower by 2025.

As recently as the early 90s, India was known only for Taj Mahal and snake charmers. With a GDP growth rate averaging 8 percent between 2000 – 2010 India was second only to China as one of the world’s fastest-growing large economies and was seen as only one which could keep a check and balance on China.

India had everything going for it well – infrastructure and manufacturing revolution, export driven growth in terms of services in IT, data analytics, financial market research and legal services, ramped up levels of domestic savings and investment.

A country to become a superpower will have to have a predefined structure, mindset and behavior. Sustaining rapid growth required the country’s elite — government, media, academics and other key members of civil society — to confront and overcome a number of challenges.

India’s emergence as a superpower means it was possible to lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty within one generation while embracing pluralism, a free press and vibrant democracy. India’s rise would mean putting to rest the idea that a command-and-control political system is the only viable route to economic salvation and that democracy is somehow antithetical to rapid economic growth. It would mean leading by example of how to combine rapid economic growth with fairness towards and inclusion of those at the bottom rungs of the ladder. In a democratic system such as India’s, where even the poorest people exercise their political rights actively, uplifting not just the better off but also the poorest will be critical for social stability.

It would mean leveraging information technology to boost the effectiveness and efficiency of its institutions — corporations, government and civil society. India was expected to become a world leader in market-driven innovation. Adversity combined with ingenuity has always been the mother of innovation and who better than India where low income levels will continue to provide a very large opportunity for India’s entrepreneurs to emerge as leaders in frugal innovation, i.e. the design, production and delivery of ultra-low-cost products and services.

India was poised to become one of the world’s least corrupt developing economies by 2025. The “Right to Information Act” passed by the Parliament in 2005 empowered every citizen to request information from a public authority, which must comply within 30 days. Over the coming years, a combination of factors — the information act, a rapidly growing and educated middle class and a merciless and very free media — could well ensure that the likelihood of getting away with corruption will decline rapidly.

Now, imagine a country totally opposite to these theories. That’s what India has become now. From personal experience of my travels around the globe, there was a time when people would be in awe the moment they came to know I was from India. They would marvel at how Indians are brilliant and would appreciate the services of Indians in the field of science, technology, engineering and medicine.

India now is a land of cow urine drinking messianic cult led by an illiterate clown, backed by ignorant and uneducated stalkers and idolised by privileged turds.

It will not end well. By the way, China has moved way ahead, all one can do is cry sour grapes.
