After thumping winning performance by AIMIM clinching seven seats in Ahmedabad Municipal elections it seems that Muslim political leadership rise in Gujarat under the watchful eyes of Barrister Owaisi.
The AIMIM won 7 seats from the Jamalpur and Maktampura wards out of a total 8 seats. It made an impressive debut in the 192-member AMC. This win is a pointer that the AIMIM can easily win 2 legislator seats from these areas in the next Gujarat Legislative Assembly elections. The rising acceptability of Asaduddin Owaisi even in Gujarat will give sleepless nights to Narendra Modi and Amit Shah. It is not just the Muslims but also the Dalits and the Adivasis who are reposing faith in Asaduddin Owaisi.
The emphatic win of Beena Parmar on AIMIM’s ticket is a testimony to the coming together of Muslims, Dalits, and Adivasis. The AIMIM – BTP alliance led by Chhotubhai Vasava can be a game-changer in the next Assembly elections in 2022. The local body elections in Gujarat to be held on 28th February 2021 will help in strengthening the roots of the Muslim – Tribal alliance.
Owaisi really challenged Modi and Amit Shah in Gujarat which is the fortress of BJP and RSS for almost three decades.
Apart from fielding 21 candidates in the AMC election, AIMIM is also contesting the Godhra and Modasa municipalities, where voting will take place on February 28.
The alliance between the AIMIM and the BTP is a fall out of the treachery by the Congress. There was an alliance between the Congress and the BTP in the recently held panchayat elections. In Dungarpur, the BTP fell short by one vote to capture the municipal chief post. The other side of the Sangh Parivar coin – Congress joined its natural ally and the original side of the Sangh Parivar to defeat the BTP. Similar treachery was done in some other municipalities due to which the BTP lost power. This incensed the BTP to walk out of the pre-poll alliance. The BTP has now decided to seek a reliable alliance partner in the AIMIM.
The BTP is strong in Narmada and Bharuch districts. There is a sizeable Muslim population in Bharuch. The AIMIM – BTP alliance can give the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) a run for its money. The Tribal-Muslim alliance will be a formidable one on paper. Can the BTP transfer its votes to the AIMIM? Can it convince its cadres to work hand in hand with the AIMIM cadres?
Political prudence demands that Asaduddin Owaisi weighs the pros and cons of this alliance with the BTP. It is significant to note that the BTP like the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) has a love affair with the BJP!
It may be recalled that in June 2020, BTP president Mahesh Vasava and his father Chhotu Vasava, BTP founder and MLA from Jhagadia constituency in Bharuch, had abstained from voting in the Rajya Sabha polls, thus paving the way for the BJP’s victory on three of the four seats. Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil won the other one seat.
Now it looks that Narendra Modi finds his new enemy in Asaduddin Owaisi as Ahmed ‘Miyan’ (Patel) is no more. It is in public memory how Modi took his enemity at the personal level and targeted Ahmed Patel.
Modi had incited the Gujaratis in his political rallies that ‘Ahmed Miyan’ will become the chief minister of Gujarat. It implied rhetorical posturing that if the Hindus do not vote for the BJP, a Muslim will become the chief minister of Gujarat. And the rest is history.
All of AIMIM’s success in Ahmedabad has been at the cost of the Congress party. AIMIM won all four seats in Jamalpur ward and three of the four seats in Maktampura ward. All were held by the Congress in 2015. AIMIM, which is looking to spread its base across the country, has already announced that it will field candidates for the 2022 assembly elections as well.
The coming one year will decide if Asaduddin Owaisi can beard Narendra Modi in his Gujarat den.
