Nationwide Dalit Strike

Organizations belonging to the Dalit and Adivasi groups have called for a “Bharat Bandh” on August 21 in protest of the lack of adequate protection and representation for these populations.

In response to the recent ruling on Scheduled Caste (SC) reservations by the Supreme Court, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress, and the Rashtriya Janata Dal declared on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, that they would support the call for a Bharat Bandh on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

Organizations representing Dalits and Adivasis have called for a “Bharat Bandh” on Wednesday in protest of the lack of adequate protection and representation for these marginalized populations.

In response to a recent ruling by a seven-judge Supreme Court bench, the National Confederation of Dalit and Adivasi Organizations (NACDAOR) has expressed opposition, arguing that it subverts the previous decision of a nine-judge bench in the historic Indira Sawhney case, which laid the groundwork for reservations in India.

Along with endorsing the daylong Bharat Bandh on Wednesday, the Bahujan Samaj Party also charged that the Congress and the BJP were working together to abolish reservation. It stated that these parties and others ought to comprehend the value of reservations and refrain from abusing them.

JMM has requested that all of its leaders, as well as district coordinators, presidents, secretaries, and coordinators, actively engage in and offer support for the 14-hour nationwide strike.

JMM general secretary Vinod Kumar Pandey stated in a statement that “the recent verdict given by the Supreme Court on the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe reservations would prove to be an obstacle in the path of upliftment and strengthening of the SC/ST classes.”

According to RJD state general secretary and in-charge of publicity Kailash Yadav, the party has made the decision to lend its support and take part in the all-day strike.

Rakesh Sinha, a spokesperson for the State Congress, added that the party has endorsed the bandh call.
