According to Marc Miller, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, foreign students can now only work 24 hours per week. This announcement was made on Tuesday.

“We relaxed the 20-hour work week requirement for international students in order to aid in the rehabilitation process following the pandemic. He tweeted on his official X (formerly known as Twitter) account, “Today, I announced that this measure will no longer be extended and, this autumn, off-campus student work hours will be limited to 24 hrs/week.”

On April 30, the regulation that permitted students to work off campus for more than 20 hours per week was terminated. The official decree further stated that students may continue working an unlimited number of hours during designated academic breaks.

According to Marc Miller, this modification will enable overseas students to focus on their studies. International students travel to Canada primarily to pursue their academic careers. With this modification, students will be able to concentrate on their studies and yet have the opportunity to work. He stated, “We’ll keep upholding the program’s integrity while shielding pupils from harm.

According to the Canadian government, recent research from both the US and Canada indicates that students who work more than 28 hours a week see a significant drop in their academic performance, and working more than 24 hours a week increases the likelihood that a student will drop out of their programme.
