Did PAN fail to link to Aadhar? Here’s how to submit your ITR even now. If, by the government-imposed deadline of June 2023, you have not connected your PAN with your Aadhaar, filing your income tax return may prove to be difficult.
If the PAN is not connected to the Aadhaar, it becomes inactive. As to the income tax department’s clarification, it is still valid and can be utilized to file the income tax return.
July 31, 2024 is the deadline for people to file their income tax returns (ITRs) if they do not require an audit for the Financial Year 2023–24 (Assessment Year 2024–25).
What is a PAN that isn’t working?
When a PAN isn’t connected to the taxpayer’s Aadhaar number, it’s considered inoperative.
If your PAN isn’t working, how do you file an ITR?
According to Vijay Bharech, Director at Deloitte Haskins & Sells LLP, “one may pay the income taxes due and file the Income Tax Return (ITR) irrespective of PAN becoming inoperative,” livemint.com was informed.
It is significant to remember that even if your PAN is inactive, the procedure for filing income tax returns stays the same.
To file income tax returns, just follow the instructions after logging into your account on the income tax e-filing platform.
“Just sign into your account on the income tax e-filing portal and proceed with the income tax return filing instructions.” According to Abhishek Soni, CEO and Co-founder of Tax2win, “this usually entails going to the e-file section, choosing the option for income tax return filing, and proceeding with the necessary details and documentation.”
Procedure for income tax refunds
But having a dormant PAN will have a number of consequences. You will not be eligible for a refund or interest on any refunds if you file an Income Tax Return (ITR) with an inactive PAN. Aadhaar and PAN must be linked in order to submit a refund claim.
“The refund, if any is due, will not be issued to the taxpayer, and the interest on the refund shall be paid only from the date the PAN becomes operative,” Bharech stated.
Date of the revised ITR
You still have until March 31, 2024, to file an amended income tax return (ITR) if you failed to file your initial one.
Updated returns for any of the assessment years 2021–22, 2022–23, and 2023–24 may be filed by taxpayers. It’s crucial to remember that any unpaid taxes must be paid in addition to the amended return.
