December 18, 2023, National: The preferred airline in India, IndiGo, made history by being the first to transport 100 million passengers in a single year. With this accomplishment, it has joined a select group of international carriers that conduct business on this scale. This development strengthens IndiGo’s position as one of the top ten airlines in the world based on passenger volume.
Having celebrated its 17th anniversary this year, IndiGo has emerged as one of the airlines that has reached the milestone of 100 million passengers the quickest. The airline carried 78 million passengers in CY 2022 (a little bit more than pre-Covid19 levels). With this new milestone, passenger traffic is expected to increase by 22% in 2023. Recently, IndiGo became the first airline in India to operate more than 2,000 flights per day, marking yet another first. 32 foreign locations are among the 118 destinations that IndiGo currently serves.
Mr. Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, gave a speech at the event and stated, “We are extremely delighted to achieve this historic milestone, welcoming 100 million passengers in a year.” This historic number is the consequence of our customers’ love and trust as well as the dedication and hard work of all IndiGo employees. This accomplishment also serves as confirmation of our well-executed plan. For the past 17 years, IndiGo has connected people and dreams, enabling hundreds of millions of Indians to travel by air. We are proud to have given the country wings.
In order to support its growth plans and achieve its goal of doubling in size and scale by the end of this decade, IndiGo launched a growth strategy in 2022 under the three strategic pillars of “Reassure, Develop, and Create.” The airline placed an unprecedented order with Airbus for 500 new aircraft to support these goals. In addition to the previous orders for more than 450 aircraft, IndiGo has placed this order.
Achieving this fantastic milestone in just one year is a testament to IndiGo’s and Indian aviation’s overall fantastic year. Both the country and the travel and hospitality industry stand to gain from the government’s vision for India’s development and growth, which views aviation as one of the key drivers. In India, a country with a vast geographical area and a diverse population, aviation plays a significant role in reducing distances and fostering interpersonal relationships.
In addition to bolstering domestic connectivity, IndiGo has expanded its network by over 20 new international routes in the past six months. In order to achieve growth in the most prudent financial and environmental manner, the airline plans to continue adding destinations to its network over the coming months, including Medina, Saudi Arabia, and Bali, Indonesia. By doing this, IndiGo is able to meet our customers’ mobility needs and contribute to India’s development.
