Nearly all forms of sports, both indoor and outdoor, are included in the category of technology-assisted sports. Chess is one example of a game where technology has been heavily utilized.
Computers could produce up to 20 chess moves for each move made by a human player when I studied computer science, but it used to take a long time.
We now have “Rapid Fire Rounds,” where the player must act fast to counter a combination in order to win. A vast array of potential chess move combinations must be available to the player. Since there are thousands of possible combinations, this calls for extremely high processing power. Chess players can learn how to respond to different combinations by using computer simulations.
It now takes this kind of technological assistance to produce Sports World Champions. Not only is artificial intelligence widely used in chess, but it is also used in most other sports. Technology and sports integration is thus imperative, and IIT Madras’ Sports Excellence Admission is a step in that direction.
Who better than athletes to discover, create, and assess novel sports technologies?
Among the 23 IITs in India, IIT Madras will be the first to implement admissions based on sports excellence with the launch of “Sports Excellence Admission.” It is an honour for us to take up this project and assist the nation in producing elite athletes who will also excel academically and as leaders.
Beginning with the 2024–2025 academic year, the Institute will offer two supernumerary seats in each of its undergraduate programs for Indian nationals, one of which will be reserved only for female students. This initiative is known as Sports Excellence Admission.
Our goal is to uplift and assist those who aspire to be elite athletes in their chosen sports. This not only helps athletes but also the student body, which gains a lot from the diversity on campus. A diverse student body contributes to sports’ beneficial effects on development on both a personal and professional level.
Long-term, acknowledging excellence in sports (and maybe other disciplines like music and the arts in the future) will influence how society views success. Prioritizing students’ holistic growth from an early age in school will better equip them for the working world.
The country’s sporting talent will be integrated with technology, and academic achievement will be fostered alongside athletic talent as expected outcomes of this Sports Excellence Admission. Participating in sports can also result in a goal-oriented, stress-free student life as well as a joyful and stress-free campus environment.
Participating in sports teaches people how to deal with sudden success and failure. A batsman can get out the very next delivery after hitting a sixer on a ball. Athletes are able to take on such rapid success, failure, praise, and criticism. It is true that all IIT Madras students strive to instill this crucial quality.
The primary goals of the Sports Excellence Admission are to identify athletes and equip them with technological skills. Wearable sensors and a plethora of other technologies are now used by athlete management systems to track their health, analyze the data produced by AI, and offer feedback.
This field is expanding rapidly, and there are plenty of job opportunities. Sportsmen with technological know-how have the potential to create a wealth of innovations and unicorn companies (a unicorn is a startup valued at more than $1 billion USD).
Additionally, IIT Madras is home to the Centre of Excellence in Sports Science and Analytics, which strives to establish itself as a worldwide hub for sports technology innovation and the provision of goods and services to improve athlete performance as well as benefit general fitness and health consumers. In order to guarantee these student-athletes’ advancement in both their academic and athletic careers, the Centre will collaborate closely with them.

In order to boost fan engagement, it involves developing and delivering goods and services across media platforms, collaborating with athletic federations and bodies to build their platforms, improve the on-field experience, and collaborate with other media platforms.
As a result, IIT Madras is well-positioned to successfully integrate sports with technology by offering Sports Excellence Admission, which is undoubtedly a crucial step toward realizing our nation’s goal of producing world champions in every sport.
