‘Miachaung’ forming cyclone over Bay of Bengal : Tamil Nadu, battered by nonstop rain for the past few days, is preparing for an impending cyclonic storm, according to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) weather report.

According to the Met Department’s most recent report, a clearly defined area of low pressure that lingered over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the South Andaman Sea that it bordered moved west-northwest and transformed into a depression at 5:30 am on Friday.

At the moment, it is located 790 km east-southeast of Puducherry and 800 km southeast of Chennai.

By December 2, the depression will become a deep depression, and on December 4 evening, it will intensify even more into Cyclone “Miachaung.” It is going to strike the coast of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh after intensifying into a cyclonic storm.

Cyclone ‘Miachaung’ will be the fourth cyclone in the Bay of Bengal and the sixth in the Indian Ocean this year when it forms. Myanmar gave the name of the cyclonic storm.

The IMD has predicted rain activity in a number of cyclone-prone southern regions, including Tamil Nadu, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Odisha.

The morning bulletin from the Met Department states that rain is expected in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands today. Between December 2 and 4, there will be sporadic heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Puducherry and north coastal Tamil Nadu.

A similar prediction has been made for Andhra Pradesh’s coastal regions, where heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is anticipated between December 3 and December 5. Very strong downpours are also expected to hit Rayalaseema in Andhra Pradesh on December 3 and 4.

In addition to the southern states and Union territories, the eastern state of Odisha is expected to experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on December 4 and 5, especially in its south coastal and south interior regions.

Squally winds over the southwest Bay of Bengal are predicted to reach 40–50 kph with gusts up to 60 kmph starting early on December 1st, due to the influence of Cyclone ‘Miachaung’.

After that, starting early on December 2, the wind is predicted to reach 50–60 kmph with gusts up to 70 kmph, according to news agency PTI.

IMD alert prior to Cyclone “Miachaung”

A warning to fishermen has been issued by the IMD due to the impending cyclonic storm. On December 1 and 2, fishermen are cautioned against entering the southeast Bay of Bengal. Additionally, they have been instructed not to travel between December 1 and December 4 through the southwest portion of the Bay of Bengal and the coast of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

According to the IMD bulletin, fishermen are advised against going into the west central Bay of Bengal and along and off the coast of Andhra Pradesh from December 2 morning to December 5.

Additionally, it has been recommended that those at sea return to the coast of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by December 1. This alert is specifically for fishermen operating off the coast of Tamil Nadu and Odisha.

Getting ready to combat Cyclone “Miachaung”

All resources have been placed on high alert by Indian Coast Guard Region East due to the developing cyclonic storm in the southern Bay of Bengal. Teams for responding to disasters have also been kept ready for quick mobilization. Fishing boats and other vessels have also been advised to head back into port.

The impact of the cyclone in Odisha, which frequently experiences the worst effects of cyclones, could only be determined after it forms, according to IMD scientist Umashankar Dash.

Nevertheless, the eastern coastal state has issued an alert for up to seven districts. The collectors of the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, and Ganjam were asked to exercise caution in light of the approaching cyclone by Special Relief Commissioner Satyabrata Sahoo in a letter.
