The 15-player World Cup roster can be changed by teams up to September 28. After that, all changes require ICC approval.

Tim Southee, a seamer for New Zealand, will have surgery on his right thumb on Thursday after breaking a bone there during the fourth One-Day International match against England at Lord’s. But a decision will be made next week on whether or not he can participate in the crucial World Cup.

We’re keeping our fingers crossed that Tim’s surgery goes well, says New Zealand head coach Gary Stead.

If the treatment is successful, “he’ll have some pins or screws inserted in his right thumb, and it will be a matter of making sure Tim can tolerate the pain and manage the actual wound when returning to train and play,” said Stead.

We would logically aim to have him available for our World Cup opener against England on Thursday, October 5, in Ahmedabad.

Tim is obviously a very seasoned and significant member of our team, and we want to give him every opportunity to participate in this World Cup campaign, he continued.

Southee, who participated in the 2011 edition of the tournament staged in India, will play in his fourth ODI World Cup.

The Black Caps have traveled to Bangladesh for a three-match ODI series that begins on Thursday after they lost to England by a score of 1-3.

Before playing the first encounter of the competition against England on October 5, they will play World Cup warm-up games against Pakistan and South Africa on September 29 and October 2, respectively.
