Being humble is one of the best and most admirable characteristics a person can have but is rarely seen in today’s world.

A humble person doesn’t go out of their way to show off everything they possessed and accomplished in life.

What it means to be a humble person

In definition, being humble is the exact opposite of having pride and arrogance. Even when you have several things to boast about, you choose to be humble and kind about your specific accomplishments.

They’re modest with everything and everyone and the world sees them as someone with kindness and simplicity rather than arrogance and pride.

Being humble doesn’t means having a negative opinion about yourself, it actually means having an accurate opinion of yourself. An accurate opinion of yourself is one that includes awareness and acceptance of your strengths, as well as your flaws.

Most importantly, humble people know that they are not the best person in the room.

They actually thrive in connecting with people more experienced and well-versed than them because this means that they can learn from them.

A humble person doesn’t introduce themselves with accomplishments but instead they do it in a subtle way that isn’t too strong.

Ways to be humble in life

1) Admit you are not the best

The primary way to become more humble is to admit that you are not the best in everything, even when you try your hardest to achieve that.

You have to reach the point where you’re okay with admitting that you won’t be the best as there will always be someone better at something than you.

2) Recognise your flaws

Each one of us has our flaws along with the best parts of ourselves, but not everyone accepts our flaws as they are.

Recognise that in being human comes with both strength and weaknesses and the faster you accept that the more humble you can become.

3) Admit when you make a mistake

You can never run away from making mistakes as it’s part of our nature.

When you do make a mistake, instead of the tendency to run away from them, admit that you made them.

Avoid deflecting or being defensive as there’s nothing humble about that.

4) Be grateful, not boastful

There’s a huge difference between arrogance and gratitude and you need to know where to draw the line.

Be thankful for everything you possess and achieved and leave it at that.

Avoid boasting, especially when people didn’t exactly ask you.

 5) Listen mindfully

The factor that sets apart the humble from the arrogant is that a humble person will go out of their way to listen to what you have to say whereas an arrogant person will listen just to talk about themselves further.

It’s significant to become a good listener if you aspire to be humble.

6) Accept all kinds of feedback

Whether good or bad, humble people aren’t afraid of receiving all kinds of feedback in their lives, especially when they know that it can potentially improve their lives.

Be accepting of constructive criticism, even when hearing negative feedback isn’t the easiest thing to hear.

After all nobody wants to hear their faults and wrongdoing from someone.

7) Don’t brag

The unspoken rule about being humble is if nobody particularly asked, don’t brag about your accomplishments.

Even when they do ask, say them in a subtle manner and not in a proud manner.

Nobody wants to be around someone that brags about everything in their life as it can be perceived as self-centered.

8) Be more considerate

You don’t know what people are going through or are thinking so with this in mind, try to be more empathetic to what others are feeling.

Boasting about things doesn’t help others deal with a difficult situation in life so always try to feel the room.

9) Appreciate others

There’s something so pure and kind about humble people and it mostly comes from their ability to appreciate other.

If you want to be more humble, show that appreciation more whether that’s in the form of kind words or action.

You never realise it at the time, but an act of appreciation goes a long way.

10) Learn to put others first

When you’re someone who has a naturally selfless nature, it’s easier for you to be humble since you always put the needs of others above your own.

When you consider their feelings, it comes with a realization to tone down your accomplishments as not everyone wants to hear about them.

Unless asked, it’s okay to give a vague description.

The importance of being humble

You might be thinking about what the point of being humble is, but the impact has more to do with ourselves than with how others perceive us.

Humble people tend to have a very good sense of who they are and what they are good at. They are often confident and self-assured.

It also improves and develops the quality of your relationship with others when you make more of an effort to listen rather than talk about yourself.

At the end of the day, humility says more about your character and value than anything else so the best thing you can do is choose to be a humble person.

While the humble path doesn’t come easy, it’s a significant part of your self- development.
