The former squad captain claimed to be proud of the “cultural changes” he was able to implement.
Former India captain Virat Kohli claims certain experts and supporters called him a “failed” captain because he didn’t take home an ICC trophy.
Under Kohli’s leadership, India lost the final of the 2021 World Test Championship against New Zealand, the 2017 Champions Trophy, the 2019 World Cup, and the T20 World Cup in the UAE.
Given that he was a member of the squads that won the 2011 World Cup, the 2013 Champions Trophy, and five Test victories under MS Dhoni, Kohli claimed that a lot was made out of the defeats.
When asked if it ever bothered him that his team had not won an ICC trophy while he was captain, Kohli responded, “Look, you play to win tournaments. Much was said about it (not lifting an ICC trophy as skipper). I led the team in the 2017 Champions Trophy, the 2019 World Cup, and the (first-ever) World Test Championship final for India.
“Thus, we lost the most recent T20 World Cup in 2021 after three ICC competitions. We weren’t eligible. We made it to the 2017 Champions Trophy final, the 2019 World Cup semifinals, and the final of the (World) Test Championship, yet I was still viewed as having failed as captain. At the Season 2 of the RCB Podcast, Kohli gave a speech.
The former squad captain claimed to be proud of the “cultural changes” he was able to implement.
“I never assessed myself from that perspective” (defeats in ICC tournaments). For me, what we ultimately accomplished as a team and as a shift in culture will always be a source of pride because a tournament only lasts so long whereas a culture develops over time. For that, you need consistency over a long period of time,” Kohli stated on the podcast of Royal Challengers Bangalore.
“More character is required for that (creating cultural change) than just winning a competition. “If you look at it from that point of view, there have been people who have never won a World Cup,” said the player who won the 2011 World Cup, the 2013 Champions Trophy, and the five Test victories. I am always appreciative of my possessions. Using Sachin Tendulkar as an example, he claimed that the star won the World Cup in his sixth attempt.while he played on the team that captured the world championship in his debut.
If I’m not mistaken, that was Sachin Tendulkar’s sixth World Cup, and it was the one he won. For the first time, I was able to join the team, and I eventually found myself on a winning team.
So, it is extremely simple for me to assess what went wrong in my career. Yet I must consider what has gone well in my career, and I’m appreciative of that.
“I’m not upset that my trophy cabinet is overflowing. To me, that has always been a result of your behaviour, your level of discipline, and your attitude. what you are doing every day to strive for perfection. I believe I have been completely honest in that regard. Dhoni, according to Kohli, was the only one to get in touch with him during a difficult time. The Delhi player overcame that stage and recorded his third century in four ODIs last month.
The Asia Cup T20 event last September saw the Indian superstar finally reach a century after a nearly three-year wait.
