As a proud Indian Muslim I sit down and try to pen my thoughts on the eve of Independence Day. I have seen and celebrated numerous such Holy Days with a feeling of Valour and Pride, saluting the sacrifices made by our heroes who came from all walks of life. Loved each of my childhood days at school, college, universities and work spaces, maybe I was fortunate who never felt discriminated on the basis of my religion and gender (as many have rightly pointed out). Such was my country, canvas of tri colour, flying high in mind and heart, which still continues to be without any doubt.
When we all were celebrating the golden victories made by our Young Sports Persons at Tokyo Olympics, distributing sweets, exchanging congratulatory messages, some crazy minds were standing at Jantar Mantar and shouting evils.
What this mirror image is saying, what is getting blurred, is it the dust thrown out by such crazy minds and souls, polluting the very essence of our togetherness. Is India of my dreams getting fizzled by such acts as had been recently witnessed, may it be denial of minority spaces, freedom of thought and speech taken away (spreading hate is not to be counted in, Please), disrespect for fellow beings openly, creation of fear environ, missing safety standards and wellbeing.
Why the people are getting free ride and openly vomiting hate venom, who are these people who come quite often in public and throw such evil, why they are not being stopped, do they need to be given therapy to think positively so that they spread peace.
Being a believer in the goodness of all human beings, still hope persists that such people need to be given time to take a deep breathe and introspect. Accountability lies with the committed and democratic governance system, committed to make people’s lives easy and unrestricted, hope it will.
I try to search the real smile which we had as children, and my classmates from other communities shared the same. Are we nourishing our adults and children with right values, which promise to keep brotherhood alive? Are we creating spaces of belongingness, spaces of laughter, spaces of togetherness, and spaces of life itself? If the answer is no, confusing or in doubt where one cannot hear the inner voice, it is the high time to pause and reflect.
To reiterate, hope still continues to guide and is alive as highlighted by a New Pew Research Centre Report based on a face-to-face survey of 29,999 Indian adults fielded between late 2019 and early 2020 – before the COVID-19 pandemic, which took a closer look at religious identity, nationalism and tolerance in Indian society. Indians value religious tolerance.
Across the country, most people (84%) say that to be “truly Indian,” it is very important to respect all religions. Indians also are united in the view that respecting other religions is a very important part of what it means to be a member of their own religious community (80%).
