Panchmahal District superintendent of police Leena Patil held a shanti samiti meeting on Sunday afternoon to ensure that harmony between communities, after rioting overtook the Kalol town on Saturday. Police have so far rounded up 104 persons, including 17 women for pelting stones and injuring personnel as well as civilians, ransacking businesses and causing unrest.
On Saturday afternoon, riots broke out in Kalol town of Panchmahal district, after a suspect belonging to a minority community was arrested by the police. It took police 2-3 hours to bring the situation under control, and it lobbed 98 tear gas shells to disperse the growing mob. Two officers and several other personnel suffered injuries in stone-pelting by rioters. Three platoons of the State Reserve Police (SRP) have been deployed to maintain law and order in the town.
According to primary reports, two youths had a minor quarrel over milk supply on Friday, following which a complaint was lodged at the Kalol police station. On Saturday afternoon, police picked up the suspect for questioning, and triggered anger among people of the minority community.
They first gheraoed the police station but police were successful in dispersing the crowd gathered. Post that, a bigger mob turned up and started ransacking shops, even attacking commuters on roads.
After getting a distress call, district superintendent of police (DSP) Leena Patil along with a team from Godhra and surrounding talukas rushed to Kalol town for assistance.
As of now, a complaint has been registered against 41 people and about 50-60 unknown persons. The situation is currently under control.
