A former aide of Benjamin Netanyahu and chief of Yamina partly is on the verge of becoming the next prime minister of Israel ousting the 12-year rule of Netanyahu.
Naftali Bennett was a former IDF commando and millionaire entrepreneur who entered politics with a stronger and hard-liner right-wing approach, as the name of his party ‘Yamina’ meaning rightward indicates.
Since the time of its inception ‘Yamina party’ of Bennett, has adopted a vocal and stringent stand for the annexation of the West Bank. Bennett always used to work closely with Netanyahu and handled different portfolios in his government. However, now he drastically changed his previous position to form a coalition with the left and centralist party belonging to the opposition leader Lapid.
Lapid has generously agreed to offer Bennett the first chance to become Prime Minister in a rotational arrangement. Now Lapid and Bennett joining together with few other parties need to prove a majority in the 120- seat Knesset which is the local name of Israel’s Parliament within two days. Moreover, if they fail to prove the majority Israel may need to hold another general election in July. Previous elections have failed to give a clear-cut majority to any party or alliance.
The formation of a coalition government by Bennett has got the potential to ensure peace in the region as left and centralist parties are not in favor of settlement drive in the occupied territories.
Furthermore, for the stability of the government, Bennett may need to rely on the support of few Arab parties which will have their influence on the policies of the government and not favoring the settlements which are the major point of contention between Palestinians and Jews.
However, Netanyahu will try his maximum to topple the future fragile government by putting pressure on individuals from the smaller parties. He understands very well that remaining out of power will invite a lot of inquiries and hard times, as his name is involved in many corruption cases.
At present, he is alleging that Bennett’s coalition government will be weaker in nature, softer on settlement, and will pose threat to the existence of Israel.Netanyahu had consecutive 12 years of government started with the 2008 war between Israel and Palestine.
Furthermore, 2014 and 2021 both the election years saw brutal conflicts and loss of innocent lives. He took maximum advantage of the hostilities between the Palestinian and Jews mostly on the issue of settlement for gaining electoral victory. His tenure needs to be subjected to an international inquiry and he should be tried in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the crime against humanity.
He is not only responsible for the massacre of innocent Arabs but also guilty of putting the life of Jews under potential threat. Such criminals need to be brought to justice by the international community for the sake of the greater interest of humanity.
