Xabi Alonso will continue as Leverkusen’s manager despite Bayern and Liverpool’s interest. Xabi Alonso will remain coach of Bayer Leverkusen, dispelling rumors that he was considering the empty positions at Bayern Munich and Liverpool.
“This is the right place for me to be, to grow as a coach,” Alonso declared on Friday, citing his team’s perseverance as a major factor in his decision to stay. They gave me a ton of reasons to remain optimistic about the club, including their dedication, ambition, and passion for a successful season. “I believe that my work is not finished here,” stated Alonso, 42.
“I want to support the young players’ development as well as the team’s. And I’m cool with that provided I get to participate in the process. After weighing all the factors, I hope that this crucial decision is the right one.
I’m content. Time will tell because I’m still young, but that’s how I feel right now.” Before telling Leverkusen, Alonso claimed to have given his future some thought during the most recent international break.
With eight games left in the Bundesliga, Leverkusen is 10 points ahead of opponents and poised to win its first German championship. When Alonso took over in October 2022, Leverkusen was in the relegation zone. However, they have yet to lose this season in all competitions.
Alonso is now one of the most in-demand soccer coaches in the world thanks to his record. His contract with Leverkusen is set to expire after two more seasons.
Alonso stated that this is his first head coaching position and that he still feels like he is learning as he goes. The former midfielder for Spain played for both Liverpool and Bayern.
Looking for a new coach for the upcoming season are both clubs. Alonso’s Leverkusen is lagging so much behind that Bayern is parting ways with Thomas Tuchel, and Jørgen Klopp is leaving his position as manager of Liverpool after nine years.
Alonso did not disclose the extent of his communication, if any, with Bayern or Liverpool.
