History and Founding
The Assam (Central) University Act of 1989 gave rise to the establishment of Assam University. It was founded in 1994 with the principal objective of meeting the demands of the local education system and giving the people of Assam and the neighbouring North East states easy access to higher education.

The university has two campuses: Silchar Hailakandi, Assam, and Diphu, Assam. The main campus is situated in Silchar, Assam. The main campus is equipped with state-of-the-art academic buildings, faculty and student residences, libraries, labs, sports facilities, and administrative offices.
