Since the two were twelve years old, Joe Root has known Jonny Bairstow. On the first day of the fifth Test match at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala, Bairstow accepted his 100th Test cap from his childhood friend amid cries from all around.

Jonny Bairstow will become the 17th player to play 100 Test matches for England on Thursday.

We are standing here, at the base of the Himalayas. To get here, you had to climb a mountain already. When I first met you, I was 12 years old and had attended the Yorkshire Academy. And everyone could see that you were talented back then,” says Root.

Having said that, it’s not an easy path to reach  Test matches. There are going to be some obstacles in your path. The ability to overcome obstacles and misfortune is one of your greatest qualities both as a player and as a character. Show a tremendous amount of persistence,” says Root, causing the group to erupt in laughter.

Even with such a lengthy career, Bairstow has never held a permanent position in the England Test team. Over the years, his batting position has fluctuated, and it has never been certain if he would keep wicket. Root also mentioned Bairstow’s voyage.

“I am aware of how important it is to you to represent England on the pitch and how much this shirt, cap and badge mean to you.

It’s a significant component of your identity as a player. You’ve broken and set numerous records with the bat and gloves in your hundred games.

“You’ve been a part of some of England’s most memorable Test victories ever, and you’ve played some of the most thrilling and thrilling innings in a Test shirt.”

It’s common knowledge that in 1998, Jonny’s father David, a former Test cricket player, committed suicide due to depression.

“Janet, your mother, Becky, the rest of your family back home, and of course Meg and Edward, who will eventually learn of all the incredible accomplishments you’ve made, are all very proud of you. Additionally, be aware that your father is looking down on you this week and today, grinning broadly and beaming with pride, says Root.

“On and off the pitch, we all look forward to creating a great deal of new memories with you. relishing a unique grilling experience at your residence at some point.

“Promise me one thing this week, you’ll try and relax. You try and enjoy it and you’ll be genuine and authentic to who you are as a player. Stick your chest out. Look him in the eye alright but stay in your crease alright.”

Bairstow scored a quickfire 18-ball 29 before he was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav.
