Gandhigram, Tamil Nadu, India is home to the Gandhigram Rural Institute (GRI), a facility devoted to research, education, and rural development. It was created in 1956 with the intention of advancing sustainable development methods and helping to improve rural areas. It was inspired by the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi.
Goals and Objectives
GRI’s goals are to advance rural development via outreach, outreach programmes, and research. Upholding social fairness and equity, it seeks to empower rural people and alleviate their socioeconomic issues.
Academic Programmes
GRI provides extensive undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate programmes in a variety of fields, including agriculture, education, health, and rural development as well as rural sociology and economics. The goal of these programmes is to give students the information and abilities they need to function well in rural environments and advance their own growth.
Research
To address important issues pertaining to rural development, agriculture, healthcare, education, and social welfare, GRI actively conducts research. The institute conducts research that informs policy and practice in partnership with governmental agencies, non-governmental organisations, and other organisations.
History
Drs. T.S. Soundaram and G. Ramachandran founded GRI in 1956 as a result of being moved by Mahatma Gandhi’s idea of rural rebuilding. It began as a project for rural development and eventually changed its purpose to become a school.
Global Presence
GRI collaborates with foreign partners and takes part in international programmes pertaining to community empowerment, sustainable agriculture, and rural development. It promotes cross-cultural learning and interaction by welcoming scholars and students from throughout the world.
