For the next seven days, further rain is expected in several Tamil Nadu districts, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Additionally, the meteorological service forecasted significant rain on Sunday in 10 different state districts with isolated areas.

“Moderate rain is very likely to continue at isolated places over Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal area,” it stated.

“Light to moderate rain with occasional intense spells acompanied with thunderstorms and lightning is very likely to continue over the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal and light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning during day time, today,” it stated.

The present period of rainfall across Tamil Nadu is a result of strong easterly/northeasterly winds that are prevailing at lower tropospheric levels, according to the weather service. These winds create favorable circumstances for moisture infiltration from the Bay of Bengal.

This year, Tamil Nadu has seen unusually heavy rains. Cyclone Michaung earlier caused havoc with her torrential rains that hit Chennai and the neighboring regions.

Due to the recent intense rains in Tamil Nadu’s southern districts, the state suffered significant losses to both public and private property totaling millions of rupees.
