Located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Aligarh Muslim institution (AMU) is a public central institution. In order to advance modern education among Muslims in India, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan founded it as the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in 1875. The organisation changed throughout time, and in 1920 it was given university status.

History and Founding

The Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College was established in 1875 by eminent Muslim social reformer and educationist Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. In 1920, an Act of the Indian Legislative Council changed its name to Aligarh Muslim University.

Campus

The institution is spread across a large area that houses a number of colleges, departments, and faculties. The famous Victoria Gate is one of the campus’s most recognisable historical structures.

Academic Programmes

In subjects such the arts, sciences, commerce, engineering, medicine, law, and social sciences, AMU provides a broad range of undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate programmes.

Library and Archives

One of the biggest university libraries in Asia is the Maulana Azad Library at AMU. It holds an extensive library of rare papers, manuscripts, and books. Historical papers and materials pertaining to the university’s inception and early years are preserved in its archives.

Medical School and Hospital

The esteemed Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) at AMU provides undergraduate and graduate medical education. In addition to offering community healthcare services, the affiliated Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital acts as a training environment for aspiring medical professionals.
