The placement numbers at the institute have increased significantly over the years. In the BTech placement seasons of 2012–13, there were 83 offers; by the 2020–21 academic year, that number had increased to 239 offers.

There were 192 BTech offers overall in 2017–18; this climbed to 210 in 2018–19; but, in 2019–20, the number fell to 202. But in the last five placement batches, the institute has only seen one decline.

Between 2019–20 and 2020–21, there were 202 bids overall; in 2021–22, that number sharply increased to 239 offers.

In a similar vein, the average wage rose from Rs 11.12 lakh in 2017–18 to Rs 13.05 lakh in 2018–19 and finally to Rs 14.76 lakh in 2019–20.

IIT Patna did not see the drop in offers or average income that several other institutes throughout the globe did. Despite the Covid-19 recession across all industries, the average wage rose to Rs 17.13 lakh per year in 2020–21 and even showed a significant increase to Rs 28.86 lakh per year in 2021–2022.

In recent years, there has also been a rise in the number of corporations visiting the campus in hopes of placing employees. From 88 in 2017–18 to 95 in 2018–19, 1-6 in 2019–20, 125 in 2020–21, and finally soaring to 154 in 2021–22, the number rose.

There were 154 participating companies in 2022, including some of the biggest names in the industry: Accenture Japan, Adani Power, Amazon Berlin, Amazon India, Amazon Luxembourg, Deloitte, Darwinbox, Flipkart, FIIT-JEE, Bajaj Auto, Bloomberg Pune, Bosch, BPCL, Capgemini, Cognizant, HCL, Gameskraft, Goldman Sachs, Google (also based in London and Munich), HDFC, Housing.com, ICICI Bank, Indeed, Inframart, Intel, Ixigo, Oracle, Paytm, Oyorooms, Mahindra and Mahindra, Mercedes Benz, Microsoft Research, Morgan Stanley, RBL Bank, Qualcomm, Samsung (from Bengaluru and Noida), Sprinklr, Star Union Dai-ichi Life Insurance Co. Ltd., Synopsys, Tata Advance, Tata Digital, Tata Electronics, TVS Digital, Udaan, Uber, Unacademy, Urban Company, Viacom, Wipro, Zomato, ZS Associate, Infosys, and more.

The ten departments at IIT Patna are: the departments of computer science and engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical and biochemical engineering, materials science and engineering, civil and environmental engineering, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and humanities and social science.
