Umran Malik bowled just one over in the whole IPL 2024 season, having a disappointing season the year before.

Umran Malik, a speedster with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2022 Indian Premier League, became a sensation for his pace more than two years ago. Soon after the season concluded, his outstanding achievements earned him his first-ever call-up to the Indian team in the shortest format. Nevertheless, Umran’s time with the national team was characterized by patchy results and injuries, and his infrequent starts meant he was never able to establish a permanent spot in the starting lineup.

The’most expensive’ ticket in sports history for the Wimbledon final.

Umran struggled with the SRH this season as well, getting hardly any playing time. Despite the team’s impressive march to the tournament final, the youthful pacer from Jammu & Kashmir only appeared in one game. He only bowled one over for fifteen runs during the game, hence he did not get to bowl his entire allotment of overs.

Umran claimed in an interview with Indian Express that the bad weather that prevented him from getting any playing experience with his state team “didn’t help” his chances.

Even though I was well-prepared for the season, the weather wasn’t ideal. I had gained a lot of weight in the months leading up to the IPL, so I was really looking forward to it at that point. Regretfully, even it didn’t turn out how I had hoped,” Umran remarked.

However, it also allowed me to spend more time during practice working on the things I wanted to. I think I’ve improved as a bowler, for sure. I hurt my hamstring after the IPL, and as soon as I healed, I had dengue,” Umran continued.

How Umran is working on his bowling

Throughout his career, Umran Malik has found that controlling his economy rate has been a constant issue. In the 2022 and 2023 IPL seasons, he shown an amazing ability to continuously reach speeds of 150 kph and higher, but his control was frequently lacking.

In a previous interview with Indian Express, Paras Mhambrey, the former bowling coach for India, who resigned following the team’s success in the T20 World Cup in June of this year, emphasized this issue. Mhambrey added that Rohit Sharma eventually lost “faith” in the young pacer due to Umran’s lack of discipline.

Umran discussed his preparation for the forthcoming season and his approach to improving his bowling in light of India’s highly anticipated tour of Australia later this year.

“I’m bowling a lot with the new ball these days because I think swing can really help at my pace. Umran remarked, “I want to learn a few things, mainly how to create and carry out a strategy.

“If you possess that, you’ll be more equipped to manage the difficulties. It is not about me or what I do when I bowl in a match. I have to be considerate of their plans and blend in with the bowling group. Therefore, I must be prepared in that regard. I’m attempting to bowl yorkers even with the new ball because, if I can do it well, I’ll gain the confidence to bowl it frequently. You must figure out how to take the batsmen by surprise.

“I want to make things easy.” I intend to be prepared for the upcoming domestic season. I’d undoubtedly improve as a bowler if I played more games. Despite the fact that I just participated in five Ranji matches, I realized how much I had learned. Awaiting the Duleep Trophy, that is. I’ll know exactly where I stand if I play the whole season, and that will lead to opportunities. Umran stated, “I’m waiting to hold the red ball in my hand.”
