Australian Open 2024: Jannik Sinner advances to round three, Ons Jabeur and Caroline Wozniacki are eliminated. World No. 6 Ons Jabeur lost to Russian teenage phenom Mirra Andreeva in straight sets, eliminating her from the 2024 Australian Open.
In the second round, qualifier Maria Timofeeva defeated former champion Caroline Wozniacki.
In the second round of the Australian Open, 16-year-old Andreeva defeated three-time Grand Slam finalist Jabeur, marking yet another noteworthy achievement in her developing career. Andreeva defeated Jabeur 6-0, 6-2 to complete her first-ever career top-10
triumph.
In a thrilling 20-minute opening set, Andreeva displayed maturity beyond her years, playing fearlessly against the skilled player Jabeur, whom she considers a “idol”.
With seven winners and only three unintentional errors in six games, the Russian took command of the contest early on. Jabeur, on the other hand, was clearly nervous, making a dismal ten mistakes against a meager four winners.
Jabeur has now lost in the Australian Open second round for the second time in a row.
WOZNIACKI WAS AMAZING
In the meantime, Timofeeva defeated Caroline Wozniaki, the 2018 Australian Open champion and former world number one.
After dropping the opening set, Timofeeva, 20, came back to win the next two and eliminate the previous champion. Timofeeva won in two hours and twenty-one minutes against Wozniacki, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Timofeeva remarked in a statement following her victory that playing against Wozniacki was an honor.
“I’m actually a little stunned right now. Playing here today versus Caroline was an honor for me. To be honest, I had no expectations coming into the match; I was just trying to prove to myself and see how it would play out. It went extremely well. In the in-person interview, Timofeeva declared, “I relished every minute of it.”
ROUND 3 SINNER ADVANCES
Jannik Sinner, ranked fourth in the world, defeated Dutch tennis player Jesper de Jong in straight sets to get to the Australian Open round of 3.
At the Margaret Court Arena, Sinner defeated De Jong 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the Australian Open third round for the third time in his career.
After defeating the 161st player in the world, Sinner declared that he respects everyone and has no fears.
“The opponent you play against is really not important. You respect everyone and have no fear of anyone. I strive to demonstrate this to everyone,” Sinner remarked.
In just one hour and forty-five minutes, the Italian defeated De Jong without conceding a single break point.
