Nick Kyrgios says he will play for two more years at the top level, hinting at an early retirement. Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has stated that he will only play for a year or two more after retiring, revealing his early retirement plans.
Due to knee, foot, and wrist problems, Kyrgios had to withdraw from the Australian Open earlier this year, which limited his play. Since the October 2022 Japan Open, he has only participated in one match on the tour.
For those hoping that Kyrgios would play well into his 30s, there was more bad news in a recent podcast after he announced his withdrawal from the Australian Open for the second year in a row.
During an interview for the podcast “On Purpose with Jay Shetty,” he stated, “I only want to play for about another one to two years, and be at the top, and go down my own terms.”
“Having another surgery or anything similar would be terrible for me. I believe I have a good one or two more years left, and then I’m done. Having said that, I believe I will be content with everything I’ve accomplished and will have to tell those who wish to see me play more that I won’t be playing for the foreseeable future.”
In a long interview, Kyrgios covered a wide range of subjects, including how he views the game, how he deals with the media, and how his mental health issues have affected him in the past, to the point where he considered suicide in 2019.
“If I had a bit of a normal career and I flew under the radar, I don’t feel I’d feel this way, but those couple years really, I think, put a lot on my age,” he stated.
It’s simply difficult. I’m worn out. I’ve had enough of playing tennis. His run to the Wimbledon final in 2022 will always be remembered as the high point of his career to date.
Kyrgios stated that he would prefer not to play again until he was well enough to duplicate the outstanding performance he gave at the All England Club.
It’s challenging. Regarding his recovery, he remarked, “It’s challenging. “These surgeries aren’t just like little surgeries; they’re like you might have something seriously wrong with your body and it takes time. I’m going to the gym and doing my rehab.”
