UN Calls for Greater Efforts to Promote Culture of Tolerance, Adopts Resolution Condemning Offences against Religious Sites

The UN General Assembly unanimously passed a resolution calling member nations for greater efforts to promote a culture of tolerance and peace at all levels and develop a Plan of Action to Safeguard Religious Sites.

ASPAIRE(Alliance to Save & Protect America from Infiltration by Religious Extremists) has welcomed this UN resolution adapted by the General Assembly.

Welcoming the recently adopted UN resolution, Masood Rab the National Co-Chair of ASPAIRE stated that the governments of countries all over the world be held responsible for the safety of places of worship and cultural activities of religious and other minorities in their own countries.

The UN should place all measures necessary to monitor the activities of destructive and hateful ideologies against the minorities and take steps to make sure that the perpetrators of all forms of violence including the destruction of religious sites in these countries are brought to justice.

 “The perpetrators of the destruction of religious and cultural sites of minorities be charged with the crimes against humanity and brought to justice. The governments of the countries where the violations occur should be made responsible for rebuilding the damaged and or destroyed sites and also pay for collateral damages”, he added.

Meanwhile,Muslim Peace Coalition, a nationwide US alliance of peace and anti war groups has welcomed the unanimous UN General Assembly resolution protecting the religious sites of minorities all over the world.

Welcoming the resolution Dr Shaik Ubaid, the co chair of the Coalition stated,  “The governments allover the world should be held responsible for the safety of places of worship and cultural activities of religious and other minorities. The UN should make sure that the perpetrators of destructions of such places are brought to justice and those places rebuilt.

Hundreds of mosques have been targeted in Xinjiang and other provinces in China which has unleashed a genocide of Uighur and other Muslims. The same phenomenon is seen in Burma where the Rohingya are facing a genocide and in the Central African Republic. In India too the rise of a religious supremacist movement, RSS and it’s fronts the VHP and BJP , after it destroyed the historic Babri mosque , has brought threats to many other historic mosques especially in Kashi and Mathura. “ “Churches destroyed by ISIS and mosques and graveyards by Israel should also be rebuilt,” said Dr Ubaid

“More importantly these violations and the  violations of the fundamental freedom to believe, practice and propagate ones religion and of the rights of groups to peacefully assemble and express opinion be brought under the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice by a Security Council resolution,” Muslim Peace Coalition demanded.
