2024’s Women’s T20 World Cup will include Smart Replay: Everything you need to know about the IPL 2024 technology

First implemented in the IPL and The Hundred, the Smart Replay technology will be introduced to the ICC for the first time in the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup.

Cricket’s international governing body has announced in a statement that the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup will be the first International Cricket Council (ICC) event to adopt the Smart Replay technology. Although the concept was observed in action during the English The Hundred and the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2024, this will be the first time it is applied to international cricket.

Every game will have a minimum of 28 cameras for coverage, which will be enhanced with a range of analytical and visual features. With a Hawk-Eye Smart Replay System in place that allows the TV umpire to rapidly assess synchronized multi-angle footage for correct decision-making, the ICC said in a release that the Decision assess System (DRS) will also be available at all matches.

The Smart Replay System: What is it?

The goal of the system is to accelerate the DRS’s decision-making process. The TV broadcast director typically serves as a liaison between the third umpire and the Hawk-Eye operators. The operators and the third umpire would be in the same room when the Smart Replay System was in effect, facilitating communication between the two.

In addition to expediting the verification process, the TV umpires now have access to additional visual aids, like as split-screen photos, than they did in the past.

The umpire will check the main component of the dismissal immediately instead of checking the ultra-edge if they observe a noticeable space between the bat and the ball. The umpires will have front-on and side-on visuals available on a split screen when they are checking stumpings.

October 3 is the commencement date of the ninth Women’s T20 World Cup, which is being hosted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The proceedings begin on October 3 at 7.30 p.m. IST when Pakistan plays Sri Lanka at the same location, following Bangladesh’s match against Scotland at 3.30 p.m. IST. against Friday in Dubai, at 7.30 p.m. IST, India will play New Zealand, directly after the 2016 champion West Indies take against South Africa at the same location.

Australia has won the last three competitions in a row, making them the current champions. In actuality, Australia has won the competition all but twice in its history; the West Indies won in 2016 and England won the first event in 2009. They will now try to win a seventh championship when they play Sri Lanka in the tournament’s opening game on Saturday in Sharjah at 3.30 p.m. IST. India, on the other hand, has only made it to the championship game once, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2020, when they fell to Australia by 85 runs.
