Australian Open 2024: Rohan Bopanna celebrates reaching the “special 500” mark following a successful doubles campaign. On Thursday, veteran Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna recorded his 500th victory on the circuit, marking yet another career milestone.
The historic match occurred when Australian Mathew Ebden and Rohan Bopanna overcame James Duckworth and Marc Polmans, who were given wildcards, to advance to the second round of the men’s doubles competition at the Australian Open in 2024.
In pursuit of his first men’s doubles Grand Slam victory, Rohan Bopanna, the 2017 French Open mixed doubles champion, appears to be solidifying his relationship with Mathew Ebden.
Rohan Boipanna and Mathew Ebden will aim to advance farther at the Australian Open after making it to the US Open final and the Wimbledon semifinals the previous year.
The second-seeded team had to work hard to win because Duckworth and Polmans made Bopanna and Ebden strive for it. The Australian Open champions Bopanna and Ebden, who advanced to the final in Adelaide earlier this month, trailed 1-5 in the opening set.
The Indo-Australian duo managed to maintain their composure, though, and won the opening set in a tiebreaker. Bopanna and Ebden persevered, but the more seasoned players came through in the decisive set tiebreaker, winning 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(10-2).
HOW HAS THE EBDEN-PAIR COMPLETED?
Bopanna, a seasoned player who has put a lot of effort into staying fit and improving his game to meet high standards, has defied age. He and Ebden’s collaboration saw them achieve significant success in important competitions last year.
In a fantastic year, they reached three Masters 1000 finals and took home a championship at Indian Wells.
The year 2023 established a strong basis for this powerful collaboration. The chemistry between Bopanna and Ebden on the court was evident when they advanced to the semi-finals of the renowned Nitto ATP Finals in November.
They made it to the title match at the Adelaide International as their enthusiasm carried over into the next season.
Bopanna has the chance to close that gap in his remarkable career at the Australian Open, where he is ranked No. 3 in the Doubles Rankings, a joint career high.
The combination of him and Ebden, who each contributes a unique set of abilities and experience, positions them for a deep run in the competition.
